I am a true believer. Ever since one Christmas when the rain came into the basement floor at the cabin and they had to run the shop vac for hours trying to dry it out. Johnny was 6 months, people were playing pool, kids were running around screaming and Johnny napped better than ever with that white noise drowning it all out. A beautiful thing!
With both of my girls we use noisy little fans that are plugged into the outlet connected to the switch. (follow that?) as in-- it's way more important than light. We even shove them in our suitcases on trips. Vice shmice. It's one you can sustain and SO worth it.
I just got back from Disney World, where I encountered a mother pushing a stroller with a 6 month old baby in it WITH a noise machine going as well. I think I need to get one too!
I have no idea what that machine is, but I remember when we first brought Ailish home from the hospital trying to get her to sleep while I tiptoed around the house in silence trying desperately not to wake her..she never slept very long in the silence so i brought her crib into the middle of family room and during nap times would vaccum and have the tv on,she slept like an angel.
They should tell you this stuff before you leave hospital.
I had a companion who couldn't sleep unless he had his fan on... in the middle of the freezing winter! If I turned it off he'd wake up straight away and turn it back on. Has it's pros and cons :P
I had to convert too. Derick can't sleep without a backgound hum. I am afraid I will probably get to that point too. And I didn't even think about the baby. I am nestling away all of this useful advice.
We love ours- all our kids have them in their rooms. NOah's is from Avon & the others are from Babies R Us by Dex. Both types have the option to use a timer or continous play. I LOVE the continuous play option, which many don't have. I like it to play all night. They're great- good luck! It will bring nap time bliss!
I can't tell you what I had to go through to get a white noise machine. And you know what? She hates it. Gets terrified. It never gets turned on. Had I known, we could have given you ours for Christmas. We have your name, you know.

they are really helpful until you go to your parents house and annoy the 14 yr old who is trying to sleep!!! (thanks hannah:):))
I love my loud fan! I would not be able to sleep with out it. And now my kids can't sleep with out one either.
it's the only way for us.
