Baby Names

My computer problems are solved! hauaauuuuuhhhhhh. I am so happy. So I'll be here a lot more often which is good because I've missed it.

Ruby told Jake the other night that she didn't want to have any babies. It was one of those last-of-the-day conversations when the girls are super chatty. They wrap their snake arms around you and tell you all sorts of controversial fragments to delay the impending lights out.

So Ruby said she really didn't want to have any babies. And do you know why?

She says she doesn't want to have to push them out. Jake can thank me for being so honest with them about childbirth. Hopefully she'll come around.

Speaking of babies, won't you help us name this one? We are at a loss.

Names I like in no important order:

Claire
Rosemary
Alice
Emerald
Savannah
Matilda
Odessa

Allow me to warn you. Jake doesn't like any of these names. And he's sort of the father and therefore sort of has to agree on the name...

The new name has to go well with:

Grace
Ruby
Lillie

But not sound too similar to any of them.

So give me some new names along my same taste, will ya? Old lady names, Great-grandmother names. We need them!

Sarah-
It's Ashlee Wright from the ward/ primary. Sarah Diederich told me you did photography so I thought I'd look your name up and see if I found your photography site (which lead me to this) I just love looking at photos so I was interested to see your work- and they look awesome by the way. I just wanted to welcome you into the ward and neighborhood again. We are so excited to have your family and more kids in the neighborhood... Our blog is private so send me your email address and i'll add you if your interested!

Ok, I will finally admit I look at your blog. :) Lillie B. is a friend of my husband's and I love reading about your darling girls. You are such a great mom and have FABULOUS pictures! I also have a Grace about your Grace's age. My little boy is Taggart and we are having another girl...naming her CLAIRE :) on Feb. 18. I like the classic names like you do. What about Jane, Alys (just like Alice or Alyse like Elise?), Hazel? Good luck! I'm sure you'll find something great!

Audrey was almost an Alice- which I find girlishly charming and femininely elegant at the same time. I especially like the "ah" sound at the beginning and the "lis" sound on the end, which connotes the wind slowly rolling through the treetops.

That is my vote.

Hi! I have been lurking for the past year. I love to read about your family and look at your photos. Your writing is a joy to read. My favorite name of the ones listed is Claire. I will think about any others that you might want to add to the list.

I like Claire, but I always thought a Jane would fit well into your family. I hope you are enjoying Utah! I'm jealous:)

Loving Claire, Alice and Jane. My great-grandmothers' names were Luella and Opal...and even Minnie! How great is MINNIE?!? She was a mean old lady, though...

I'm so happy for you on your move! Sounds like you guys are happy in Utah.

I like Claire...but you don't want to make Jake mad! Cool names in my fam are Delia and Colleen. They've already been used by my siblings, so I won't be using them. :( Sean's Grandma's name is Eugenia...no offense to her, but I don't recommend that one!

I like Alice.

Another suggestion - Lucy. Cute and grandma-ish at the same time. :D

claire. I think it mingles very well :)

Mabel
Pearl
Virginia
Clara/Klara
Olive

Jemima and Harriet are a couple of princesses I know here in Oz. But you've done this before and you think you are the one choosing a name but when you see that bubble of light and love you know she already has a name. See Poppy is so complicated we named her Erin Lilly and call her Poppy. God Bless.

Lindsey said...

I liked Alice and Elizabeth so she could be Lizzy for my girls. We (mostly me)also liked Olivia, and we both liked Clementine and Matilda. Kinda different but it's Kate Winslet's name in 'Eternal Sunshine' so we liked it. (We like old lady names too--Maggie Grace and Ruby Scout!!) :)

Okay, so I am so excited to participate in the baby naming game that I registered to post. :) Would Jake go for Clara? Too close to Claire? I love, love, love the name Elena. (like "Elaine-a") My husband hates it so I will never be able to use it, but a beautiful girl somewhere should have it. I don't know any grandmas with it, but I like it anyway. The grandmas in our family are: Alice, Mildred, Dorothy, Phyllis, Sonia and Reina (like "Ray-na" which means queen in Spanish). Maybe Sonia? Good luck!

Raelyn said...

So of those that you listed. I love Savannah, and I like Claire.
I think Olivia would be great with the other girls names...
I also like Mabel that someone else mentioned...If you were ever a fan of Mad About You...they named their baby Mabel...as an acronym for mothers-always-bring-extra-love. I have never forgotten that. Do you have a MIDDLE name yet? That may help with the first????

Hazel, Opal, Sophie, Ruth, Iris,Maddie, Molly, I will try to think of some more.... love Aunt Julie

I'm still voting for Kanisha... just kidding!! But seriously I can't wait to see what you decide. Good luck! I think this whole name thing is one of the hardest parts of being pregnant. I used to lose sleep over it all.

I like Claire, Matilda and Alice.. good luck! That's hard. Especially when Jake is so picky! haha

Buck McMurray said...

Sarah, it's Kristy not Buck just so you know. I love Hazel (as you know), some of the other posters names are really cute too: Opal, Pearl (that was one on my list for Lucy), I also like Rose, Mimi, Violet, Lavendar (I know it seems strange but I love it still), Coco (like Coco Chanel) very couture and chic yet old lady too. Amelia, Bebe, Scarlet, Fay, Nettie, Ella (a little over done though) and Penelope. Well, that's all. There's a beautiful song that has three of those name in it that I love about a fisherman's wife and having three girls all with strawberry hair and so on. I'll see if I can email you some info so you can listen to it. Latz lady.

I like:

Pearl
Josephine - Josie
Violet
Matilda - love it
Oh, I love Penelope too - Penny
Jane
And good 'ole Mary

Good luck! I always love playing the name game.

I have a student named Shi'Tavia. seriously. It doesn't sound anything like your girl's name. lol

I'm awful at coming up with names. We have no idea! We don't want to use names of students and with 700+ between the two of us...it makes it difficult.

Out of all your names I have a Claire (very smart, sweet girl) and had a Savannah (also a smart sweet girl). I haven't had any of the others, so no "crazy" children come to mind with any of them.

Good Luck!

Here's a list of the top 100 names in the 1890's. Your other girls' names are on there...maybe #4 is too.

and if you're willing to take baby name advice from a stranger, i have a few ideas :)

I love the names Matilda, Violet and Lucy (Lucie) that friends mentioned...
I also LOVE the name Stella, which i think goes nicely with Grace, Ruby and Lillie ( the little star to top your lovely family)..

other ideas taken from my list of names for (hopefully) future daughters:
Delphine
Eleanor (or just Nora)
Sylvie
Tessa
Ines
Valentine
Esme

Heloise

I love that time of the night!
Good list of names, but I think Emerald is too matchy-matchy with Ruby. Other old lady names that made our list or we like are: Elsie, Ruth (but it will turn into Ruthie, which is probably too much like Ruby), Nora, Jayne, Mary, Amelia, Anna, Eva, Paige.

Good luck- it's always one of the biggest jobs of having a baby for us!

Claire definitely fits well with the darling names you all ready have. One I really like but Brandon always quotes the Godfather after I remind him that I like it..... Stella. There is also Lydia and Pearl....Have fun hunting for names! That's one of my favorite parts!

Melissa said...

Oh I like Jane too, and Penelope and Norah. And one nobody has mentioned I think is Madellyn, although "Maddy" is overrated...

Jeni said...

Jane, Norah and Claire are my faves to go with your girls.

I can't help much in the grandma name department. Mine were/are Zola, Zina, Zoe, Beth, Barbara

Clara
Sophie
Lucy
Rose

Can't wait to see you guys!

only YOU could make "alice" have a comeback.

as for me, i have a grandma name I'm still hoping to use on a little girl so I'm way too selfish to share (but if you go for #5, you can probably have it)

SO...

I think Jane or Lucy would be great with your girls names...

and i'm so glad you're in the valley now. I'm so going to stalk you.

Our grandmothers are Dorothy Rosella, Ruby Janelle, Lucy May, and another Dorothy.....and my sister has Claire, Cloe (Clo-ee), Erin, Elesia. Sara is my sister, and I have always called her Sarie, because her middle name is Marie. I always wanted a little girl named Sarie.....

PS I love reading your blog and am friends with your family, though you and I don't know each other.....AKA Sister Lund Can't wait to see what you and Jake decide. And I always liked Amanda, or Mandy for short.

Missy said...

Wow, your commenters have got it down. I like Claire best from your list. But I like Ava (obviously), Jane, Hazel from what other people have suggested. Maggie might be cute too.

I have a hard time with names and don't know until I am pregnant, but your other girls names are so so cute, I'm sure the next one will be just as cute. How much longer?? What is your due date again?

Lillie said...

Wish I had a name to add to your lists--- but you're far more creative than me. But I'm so glad your computer's fixed and you're settled in.... have I mentioned I love your blog?

Cher said...

Maybe choose a name that starts with a different letter from what your girls already have. give a little more variety. :)
Claire is nice.
What about Faye? (Faith)

Joyful Noise said...

Definetly like Lucy (Jared has one) and Lydia (Becky has one). But Mary seems very fitting.

My grandmothers were Inez, Abigail,Gustava (yuck!)Hazel, Esther, and Mary.

Do you use middle names? My middle name is Inez and Becky named her youngest, Lydia Inez. She only uses it when reprimanding her and I don't like my name being remembered only when she is getting in trouble. Lydia Inez Johnson! (said in a VERY stern voice!)

Hi! I have been reading your blog since you and your sister in law came to my home almost a year ago and took photos of my new baby girl, Jennifer Karol set it up. Anyway...I like the name Anna and it kind of fits with your other girls' names!

vicky said...

I like Claire A LOT! That is my vote. I also like Anne with an "e" like anne of green gables :)
My ancestors were Dorothy and Sadie. I love Sadie. Couldn't talk Larry into it though.

Cece said...

Clara is pretty!

Sadie is a great name too. I love Violet, but then, you already have Lillie. Autumn or Hazel would be a nice addition. Stella is also super cute!

A name I haven't seen that is sooo pretty, I think, is Thea. Or Tessa (Tess) I would love to use one of these but our last name starts with T and I don't want her initials to be TT.

Kristan Carter said...

I really like Emerald...But I love Emery!!Good luck all your girls names are darling.

Cindy said...

Wow, I guess if you want lots of comments, just ask for someone's opinion. :) Congrats by the way, I love all the name ideas but as I was reading someone's comment, they used the word joy, and I thought, what a beautiful word, and name. So, there's another one for you! Keep inspiring the world Sarah. You definitely inspire me.

My great grandma's name was Zella Marie. A fascinating woman. Married at 13, had three boys, and died at the age of 17. I also like Camilla. Derick would not go for either of these. Maybe Jacob will.

I have worked in several nursing home and in addition to Ruby and Grace, there were lots of Helen and Dorothy.

My grandmothers were Helen Elizabeth, and Arminta (I have seen it spelled elsewhere Araminta). Great Grandmothers - Julia, Helen, and Margaret

I tried finding family names for my girls ... old family names that I did find and liked several ... Maija, Sofia ("Sofie"), Krista, Analiisa, Jane, Eliza, Emma, Lucy, Savannah. Can't wait to see your choice and photos also.

Lara @ What Dreams May Come said...

I tend to like traditional names too (my children are Benjamin Chase & Emaleigh Paige). It's a very personal thing, so the more suggestions to rule out, the better! I like Janelle and Hazel, my Ema Paige was almost Amelia Paige, we would have called her MIA PAIGE. My grandmothers names are: Roberta Kate, Barbara, Louise, Helen, Sandy (Sandra/ Cassandra); hubby's mom was Valorie Victorine (very pretty name & person), his grandmas were TOSCA and Catherine. The greats: Georgia, Calla Lily. I've always liked Savannah & presidential names: Regan, Kennedy. I kind of like the idea of you having a virtue (Grace), a gem (Ruby), a flower (Lillie), and a season (Autumn??). Then I think about how you announced it was a girl (the apple photo) and think maybe you could search apple names? I worked w/ a woman who named her first born SENECA-yes like the apple sauce, but it was for the Seneca Indians who take much pride in their women. Other heroines: Belle (Beauty & The Beast), ooh, or Aurora (Cinderella). or, I'm partial to this one: Superman's mom was Lara. ;) My full name is Lara Noel, and it's served me quite well. Also like when it's spelled Noelle.

Best wishes to you! We're all on pins and needles to know what you decide!!
